Discover Gaziantep: A Guide for Our International Guests

Welcome to Gaziantep, a city where ancient history meets modern hospitality. For many of our patients at Anatolia Smile, the journey to a perfect smile is also an opportunity to explore one of Turkey’s most culturally rich and gastronomically famous cities. Known as the “Paris of the East” and a UNESCO City of Gastronomy, Gaziantep offers something for every traveler.
Whether you are here for a few days of treatment or an extended stay, we have curated a list of must-visit places to make your visit truly unforgettable.

1. Gaziantep Castle (Gaziantep Kalesi)
Standing tall in the heart of the city, Gaziantep Castle is a symbol of the city’s resilience and history. Originally built by the Hittites as an observation point and later expanded by the Romans, the castle offers a panoramic view of the old city. Today, it houses the “Gaziantep Defense and Heroism Panoramic Museum,” where you can learn about the city’s legendary struggle during the Turkish War of Independence.
The surrounding area is filled with narrow stone streets and historical houses that give you a glimpse into the Ottoman era.
2. Zeugma Mosaic Museum
No visit to Gaziantep is complete without seeing the Zeugma Mosaic Museum, one of the largest and most important mosaic museums in the world. It houses stunning Roman mosaics rescued from the ancient city of Zeugma, which was flooded by the Birecik Dam.
The star attraction is the “Gypsy Girl” (Çingene Kızı) mosaic. Her haunting, Mona-Lisa-like gaze is iconic and has become the symbol of the city. The museum’s layout and lighting are world-class, providing a serene and awe-inspiring experience.

3. The Coppersmiths’ Bazaar (Bakırcılar Çarşısı)
Step back in time as you enter the historical Coppersmiths’ Bazaar. For over 400 years, local artisans have been hand-hammering copper into beautiful plates, pots, and coffee sets. The rhythmic sound of the hammers and the gleam of the metal create a unique atmosphere. This is the perfect place to pick up authentic, handmade souvenirs to take back home.
While you are there, don’t forget to visit the nearby Almacı Bazaar, famous for its spices, dried fruits, and the highest quality pistachios in the world.
4. A Gastronomic Adventure: Baklava and Beyond
Gaziantep is internationally recognized by UNESCO for its gastronomy. As a guest of Anatolia Smile, you must treat yourself to the local flavors (after your treatment, of course!).
- Baklava: Gaziantep is the world capital of Baklava. Made with layers of paper-thin pastry and vibrant green “antep” pistachios, it is a bite of heaven.
- Beyran Soup: A traditional, spicy breakfast soup made with lamb and rice.
- Kebabs: From Ali Nazik to Kıyma Kebabı, the variety and quality of grilled meats here are unparalleled.

5. Bey Neighborhood (Bey Mahallesi)
For a quiet stroll, visit the Bey Neighborhood. This area features beautifully restored stone houses from the 18th and 19th centuries. The narrow streets are home to cozy cafes, boutique hotels, and several small museums, including the Atatürk Memorial Museum and the Toy Museum. It’s the perfect place to relax and enjoy a cup of traditional Turkish tea or “Menengiç” (pistachio) coffee.
6. Rumkale and the Euphrates River
If you have a full day to spare, we highly recommend a boat trip to Rumkale (Roman Castle). Situated on a peninsula where the Euphrates River meets the Merzimen Stream, this ancient fortress offers breathtaking views and a sense of profound history. The boat tours also take you to the “sunken village” of SavaÅŸan, where a lonely minaret rises from the water.
